Though we are a true multinational energy company, our roots lie in Italy. Enel was born in 1962, when Italy's Chamber of Deputies approved the nationalisation of the electricity system after lengthy parliamentary debate.
Since then, our growth has continued hand in hand with that of the nation – a joint endeavour that has seen us emerge as more than a brand and more than a mere supplier. Over the years we have worked hard to deserve our role as an integral part of Italians’ lives.
Today we are the largest power company in the country, serving more than 27 million customers. We generate electricity from a highly diversified range of power plants, including hydroelectric, thermoelectric, geothermal, wind and photovoltaic.
Net installed capacity in Italy is more than 27 GW, over 14 GW of which is produced from renewable sources.
We are currently engaged in the promotion of ever more innovative and sustainable uses of energy – from electric mobility to meeting decarbonisation targets and the digitisation and spread of ultra-wideband.
Sustainable today means competitive tomorrow. To achieve this goal, we are focusing on participation and dialogue with all our stakeholders. Not surprisingly, our strategy is based on the concept of Open Power: energy that is open and accessible to all.
The data concerning net installed capacity, the number of countries, the number of customers and end users, the managed capacity from renewable sources, the kilometers of distribution networks and the number of employees is as of 30.06.2020. All of the other data is as of 31.12.2019.
