Rome, July 21st, 2011 - The stadium of Herat in Afghanistan will be illuminated thanks to two Italian power companies, Enel and Terna.
Enel and Terna will supply local authorities with the necessary lighting equipment, which will be transported from Pisa to the city of Herat by the Italian Air Force.
The project represents Italy's response to the Governor of Herat's letter to the Minister for Economic Development, Paolo Romani, asking Italy for help in ensuring that the stadium could also be used at night.
The stadium will be illuminated by a system of seven 22-metre high poles and 96 high efficiency light fixtures.
The Herat stadium, which was renovated with the major contribution of the Italian Provincial Reconstruction Team, is a key meeting point for the local population, especially for the city's young people. The Italian effort, which has also been acknowledged by the local authorities, has focused on helping to restore "normalcy" in the country, including through the participation of the local population at sporting events.
