The Project

Global warming entails gradual climate change – with the resulting weather phenomena that we’ve come to know in recent years. This is in addition to radical changes in the topology of our planet: like, for example, glacial retreat.

Where once there were vast areas covered with imposing glacial masses, today – more and more frequently – only grassy landscapes, bare expanses and rocky valleys remain. The photographic project “On the Trail of the Glaciers” by Fabiano Ventura has developed in the Americas, Asia and Europe over the last 10 years. It features observations and scientific surveys at the world’s most famous glacier sites. The project aims to measure the glaciers and take new photographs from the same observation points at the same time of year as those taken by photographer-explorers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

So far, the project has consisted of five expeditions74 photographic comparisons and six research programmes. It has analysed 25 glaciers, and hopes to contribute to the development of greater awareness of the impact of human activity on climate.

This communications campaign will address the sixth and final expedition of the “On the Trail of the Glaciers” project. This is planned for 2020 and it will study the largest glaciers in the Alps.
