A very special double ribbon cutting took place at the Favaro and 2 Giugno primary schools in La Spezia. In the Innovation and Sustainability Week, designed to present the projects that by 2020 aim to turn the Municipality of Liguria into a smart city, two photovoltaic plants built with Enel’s collaboration were put into service.
On February 20, Mayor Massimo Federici and environmental sustainability councilor Laura Ruocco gave the students a central role: they had the honour of holding the scissors for the ribbon cutting at the Favaro school. Two days later, the event was repeated at the 2 Giugno school. On both occasions, also sustainable energy projects developed by students of the Capellini-Sauro high school were presented.
La Spezia has invested some 6 million euros to increase the energy efficiency of its public buildings. Thanks to an agreement with Enel 34 tasks are programmed, of which nine involved the creation of photovoltaic plants fully capable of meeting local needs, with a 30% surplus to be fed into the distribution grid. In 19 schools and kindergartens the installation of renewable plants and energy efficiency works have already been performed.
At the same time as a high-efficiency co-generator for electricity and hot water production was put into service in the 2 Giugno school, 3,200 road lights were replaced with new LED lamps, resulting in benefits in terms of fuel savings (-25 %) and carbon dioxide emission reduction (-23%).
Replacement of fixtures, isolation of the external insulation or ceilings did not only regard city schools, but also the ethnographic museum, the city theatre, the sports centre, the hospital, the Mazzini library and the animal prophylactic institute. An overall redevelopment that projects La Spezia towards a smart future, equally virtuous and exemplary.
