Biodiversity is an investment in the future of the society and Enel: three good reasons to preserve and celebrate the International Day on May 22. This year's edition will be dedicated to "Biodiversity and Sustainable Tourism" and offers an opportunity to discuss the role that tourism can play to preserve the environment and its resources when it respects places and communities. An instrument of knowledge and environmental culture, especially for new generations, tourism contributes to drawing resources to preserve the habitat and the species, especially in developing countries where most biological diversity is located.. Enel, which has always been active in the protection of natural resources, is committed to ensuring that all its thermal and renewable generation plants, comply with the respect of the ecosystems.
An investment in Enel
The Group relies on natural resources, as it generates energy through water, sun and wind. Respecting the environment and natural capital is an integral part of the business and a key element for growth. The Group, thanks to projects for biodiversity around the world, contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations SDG 14 (Life below water) and 15 (Life on land)). For around one year, Enel has collaborated with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the leading organization in the field of conservation of biodiversity, to learn about the guidelines of international policies and the best practice that can be applied to plants.
The group's projects
In 2016, 142 projects were dedicated to biodiversity in 16 countries where Enel operates. Generation projects are focused on the recovery, characterization, assessments and design of the landscape in the ecosystem of mangroves near the plant of Cartagena, in Colombia. The research activity at the Huinay Scientific Station of the Chilean Patagonia, backed by the Group, received the Rolex Prix 2016 for the study of marine biology near the station. As for renewable sources, a monitoring program in Brazil with satellite systems and GPS contributes to the protection of felines, who live near the Delfina wind farm of Enel Green Pow er.In Chile, a program has been organized to recover and monitor animal and plant life near the geothermal plant of Cerro Pabellón.
