New light and new life for the Apulia region’s largest city park. Enel removed 340 existing lamps from a 170 hectare lakeside oasis in the City of Brindisi, replacing them with new models equipped with high efficiency LED light sources.
Representing Enel at the inauguration of the new illumination system at the Cillarese Park on 17 April was Concetto Tosto, Head of the Enel plant in Brindisi. Tosto explained that the new lights will produce the same level of illumination but will consume far less electricity while enabling visitors to appreciate the natural beauty of the area in the evening and night times too.
The lush vegetation of the park, typical of wet zones, is home to various species of fauna: migratory birds include the rare Ferruginous duck, ospreys and hummingbirds, while the area is also home to salamanders. The park includes three small lakes, with bridges, a fountain and spaces for hosting events. Alongside the nature reserve are pedestrian walkways, cycle paths and rest areas.
Created with the collaboration of the Brindisi Municipality and the Town Administrator, Santi Giuffré, the new lighting system marks the second project in the city’s Sustainability Plan that aims to identify shared priorities and requirements, ensuring best practices in matters of security, environment, protection for the most vulnerable members of the local community, energy efficiency and innovation.
The first project, inaugurated last January, saw the local high schools - ITIS Majorana and ITIS Giorgi - involved in an impressive School Work Experience project.
Enel Cuore Onlus is supporting several projects in Brindisi, including an initiative aimed at encouraging the younger generations to get involved in sports, and another developing innovative teaching approaches for the very young: this has already been achieved in part with the modernization of school buildings thanks to the Fare Scuola campaign.
A different type of project, in collaboration with ANCE (National Association of Building Constructors) involves the social and professional reintegration into society of prisoners from Brindisi Prison.
Lastly, Third Sector associations and ANSE (National Association of Seniors Enel) will work together to set up meetings aimed at increasing awareness of the electricity market and the grants available in the energy sector among the older generations, people with disabilities and families experiencing economic difficulties.
