ENEL WINS INTERNATIONAL RENEWABLE ENERGY AWARD

The Italian group won a Global Energy Award, one of the most sought after in the energy sector, given by Business Week /Platt's
Rome, November 19 2002 – Enel, through its unit Enel GreenPower, last night in New York was nominated “Renewable Energy Company of the Year” at the Global Energy Awards, one of the most important international prizes in the energy sector, offered by publishing groups Business Week/Platt’s. As well, Enel, through Enel Distribuzione, was a finalist in the “Most Promising Pre-Commercial Technology” category with its simplified, trailer-mounted HV/MV substation – an innovation which also has environmental benefits. The Chief Executive of Enel, Paolo Scaroni said: “Enel’s success at the Global Energy Awards is concrete proof of our commitment to technical leadership and environmental excellence. It is also a validation of our decision to focus on what we do best: the production, distribution and sale of energy.” Enel is a world leader in renewable energy and is committed to reinforcing its position. It has over 2,600 MW of installed capacity in Italy, North America and Latin America, and produces over 9 billion KWh of electricity per year from renewable sources, sparing the use of about 1,800,000 tons of fuel oil. The fuel mix is also unique: 1,800 MW of hydroelectric capacity, 700 MW of geothermal, 151 MW of Wind, 25 MW of biomas and biogas, and 4 MW of photovoltaic. The finalist in the”Most Promising Pre-Commercial Technology”category, also environmentally beneficial, is the HV/MV substation developed by Enel Distribuzione. It costs 70% less than a traditional substation and takes up a third of the space. The new substation, coupled with remote management of the medium voltage network, represents a significant step towards the creation of a new and more efficient model for the distribution network.
