ENEL BOARD APPROVES EMERGENCY PLANT RE-ACTIVATION PLAN: 1,200 MW IN 12 MONTHS

Further, the conversion to combined cycle of the the Santa Barbara (400MW) plant will be brought forward and completed in 24 months

Rome, July 2, 2003 –

The Board of Directors of Enel, given the situation of Italy’s electricity sector, examined and approved the initiatives proposed by Chief Executive Paolo Scaroni aimed at creating reserve capacity to be activated in emergencies (about 100 hours per year). The plan will be valid from both the operational and economic points of view.

The initiative consists of:

  • The re-activation of a number of idled plants, with a total capacity of 1,200MW, within the next 12 months and for an investment of about 25 million euro.
  • The bringing forward of the conversion to combined cycled natural gas of the Santa Barbara plant. The conversion, with a capacity of about 400MW, will be completed in 24 months with a total investment of 170 million euro.
