Rome, 6 December 2005 – The General Assembly of the Observatoire Méditerranéen de l’Énergie (OME) unanimously elected Piero Gnudi as Chairman. The OME is an international non-profit organisation whose main objective is to promote cooperation between the major energy companies operating in the Mediterranean basin.

As Chairman of Enel, Gnudi succeeds Reza Ciftci, Chief Executive of the Turkish company Botas, to a two-year term.

“I am firmly convinced”, said Gnudi, “that the economic and social development of the Mediterranean basin is tightly tied to the availability of abundant, cheap power supply. I therefore hope that the OME can help fostering the completion of the projects for the interconnection of the Mediterranean basin”.

Gnudi announced that Enel will host the next General Meeting of the OME in Rome on 21 June 2006.

OME acts as a forum for 29 companies that operate in the Mediterranean at the European Union level, promoting scientific research on energy issues.

In addition to Enel, the other OME members are: Edison, Energia, Eni and GRTN (Italy); EdF, GdF, Snet and Total (France); Cepsa, Gas Natural, Ree and Repsol YPF (Spain); Galp Energia (Portugal); Sonatrach and Sonelgaz (Algeria); Etap and Steg (Tunisia); Gecol (Libya); EEHC and EGPC (Egypt); PEC (Palestine); EDL (Lebanon); Botas, Euas and Teias (Turkey); Depas (Greece); Petrol (Slovenia); and INA (Croatia).
