Rome, 21 September 2006 – Enel participated in the in the New York annual meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative, the non-partisan initiative headed by Bill Clinton, the former President of the United States, contributing its experience and efforts in the development of renewable resources in the developing countries.

Each year the Clinton Global Initiative brings world political, economic and scientific leaders to New York to discuss issues of vital importance for the development of the planet and to develop innovative responses to the major challenges facing humanity.

In its contribution to the Clinton Global Initiative, Enel illustrated its activities in the renewables field in Latin America, where it already has wind, geothermal, hydroelectric and biomass plants with a total capacity of 220 MW. Enel is committed to tripling this capacity in the next two years, in collaboration with local authorities and enterprises. A special focus of this expansion will be geothermal power, a field in which Enel is the world leader, with a century of experience.
Enel is one of the world’s leading companies in the development of power generation from renewable resources: it will invest €2.4 billion in this field by the end of 2010, of which €1.1 billion outside of Italy.

In the future, emphasised Massimo Romano, head of Enel’s Institutional Affairs Department, in his remarks at the summit, the solution to the challenge of obtaining abundant electricity at competitive prices while protecting the environment lies in research and innovation, which has set the ambitious target of achieving the zero-emissions power plant by 2020. Here, too, Enel is one of the most active players at the domestic and European levels, with €80 million a year in investment, 500 researchers working at three centres and four experimental stations, and collaboration agreements with top universities in Italy and abroad.
