Published on Friday, 9 May 2008

Enel will use the turbines in its projects in Italy, France and Spain. All the world’s leading turbine manufacturers participated in the tender.

Rome, 9 May 2008 – The tender organised by Enel at the end of 2007 to select suppliers of wind plants for the development of projects in Italy, France and Spain was completed today. All the world’s leading wind plant manufacturers submitted their bids in the tender.

Major contracts were awarded to the German company Repower and to the Spanish company Gamesa. Repower will supply turbines for a total capacity of 263 MW to be installed in France (158 MW) and Italy (105 MW). On the other hand, Gamesa will provide the remaining 289 MW of capacity for projects in Spain (214 MW) and Italy (75 MW). The individual capacity of each turbine ranges between 2 and 2.5MW. Delivery of the turbines is scheduled to take place between 2009 and 2011.

Enel has launched a programme aimed at developing renewable energy sources through a portfolio of investments totalling 6.8 billion Euros. The programme will increase the Group’s total capacity from plants utilising the power of water (excluding major hydroelectric facilities), wind, sun and the natural heat of the earth from 3,112 MW at the end of 2007 to 7,382 MW by the end of 2012.

In Italy, installed capacity will increase by more than 80%, from 1,536 MW at the end of 2007 to 2,781 MW at the end of 2012. In Spain it will jump by 150%, from 360 MW to 897 MW, while in France it will reach 504 MW in 2012.

Specifically ENEL is focusing on wind power, the most efficient among renewable energy sources. Enel’s worldwide installed wind capacity is planned to increase from 857 MW at the end of 2007 to 4,752 MW at the end of 2012.
