Rome, 22 October 2008 The Carlentini 2 wind plant, in the province of Siracusa in Sicily, begins operations today. The plant consists of seventeen 850 kW wind turbines, with a total installed capacity of 14.45 MW. The annual output of the new facility is expected to be 25 million kWh.
The new plant joins the Carlentini 1 facility, composed of 11 wind turbines, which entered service at the end of 2001. The combined capacity of the two plants is 21.7 MW, equivalent to an expected production of about 38 million kWh, enough to meet the needs of some 14,000 households, equivalent to 80% of the residents of the town of Carlentini.
With this new plant, Enel has now installed a total of 240 wind turbines in Sicily, with a total installed capacity of about 200 MW, generating some 345 million kWh a year, equal to the consumption of 115,000 households and avoiding the atmospheric emission of more than 240,000 tonnes of CO2.
The wind plants are mainly concentrated in the area of the Madonie and the provinces of Siracusa and Agrigento.
Enel thus continues its broader commitment to developing renewable energy resources, a commitment that less than a month ago led to the creation of the Renewable Energy Division, which incorporates all the Groups activities in the wind, solar, geothermal and run-of-river hydro field in Italy and abroad, with a total installed capacity of about 4,300 MW.
The Division was created to leverage Enels operations in the renewables sector and to develop Enels presence in this field, with the objective of doubling total installed capacity in the next five years.
