Rome, July 23rd 2010 Enel and Poste Italiane are launching their joint collaboration program to develop electric mobility and to achieve a zero emissions level of atmospheric pollutants. The two companies have signed a memorandum of understanding to test innovative services, combined with designing offers aimed at the public to encourage alternative forms of mobility.
The municipality of Pisa a pilot city, along with Rome and Milan, in the e-mobility Italy project launched by Enel and smart, as well as the location of Enels research center is hosting an initial trial on the use of electric vehicles in performing mail delivery services in the historic city center.
Poste Italiane will employ nine electric vehicles - three Porter Piaggio Electric-Power and six Free Duck Ducati Energia that will be recharged at the smart recharging stations that Enel will install at the Primary Distribution Center (PDC) located in Pisa Ospedaletto, where the vehicles will be kept.
In addition, a recharging station for Pisa residents will be located at Pisas central post office.
The possibility of recharging the vehicles using RECS (Renewable Energy Certificate System)-certified power is currently under study. RECS is the most well-respected certification system in Europe for energy generation from renewables. The certificate is supported by producers, distributors and certification firms of 16 countries, including Italy.
Pisa and Enel have made zero emissions-mobility one of the cornerstones of their plans to improve air quality. The first 56 of Enels public recharging points for electric vehicles are being installed at locations selected in accordance with the municipality. Soon, Enel will install the first of its home stations, or domestic recharging facilities, in the garages of Pisa residents who are participating in the e-mobility Italy pilot program.
Enel and Poste Italiane will also set up a study group to evaluate and possibly develop more e-mobility initiatives, collaborating and entering into agreements with public and private entities such as businesses, agencies, trade associations, universities and research centers.
Fulvio Conti, Enel CEO and General Manager, stated: This agreement represents another important step towards the development of e-mobility and zero emission services in our country. Two major Italian companies, present throughout the nation and serving millions of customers, have teamed up to create a concrete and common strategy to preserve the environment. We are pleased to be working alongside such an influential partner as Poste Italiane in this initiative that once again places the city of Pisa, home of our research center, on the cutting edge in Italy and beyond. The smart recharging points developed by our company will provide electric vehicles with a wide range of autonomous movement across the entire Pisa area.
Massimo Sarmi, CEO of Poste Italiane explained: Enel is a well-respected company in Italy and internationally and we are extremely pleased about this collaboration on an environmental project for the use of clean energy. For years, Poste Italiane has invested in expanding the fleet of hybrid vehicles used to deliver mail in historic districts to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases to an absolute minimum as well as to provide a real, effective response to the issue of eco-sustainable mobility. Enels e-mobility project will enable us to test and develop innovative electric mobility system coupling energy-efficient postal delivery with constant attention paid to environmental preservation.
Marco Filippeschi, the mayor of Pisa added This agreement enriches the e-mobility project and will serve as an example of how new users can become involved, starting with the most important institutions and companies serving our citizens. The impact of the experiment conducted in Pisa will be both visible and comprehensible given the citys scale and its obviously specific nature. We are prepared to extend the scope of this agreement in terms of new electric vehicles as well as new users.
