ENEL GREEN POWER AWARDED 102 MW HYDRO IN BRAZIL

Through the 2013 “New Energy Auction”, Enel Green Power has been awarded contracts to supply the energy generated by three hydro plants. The plants will be constructed in the Brazilian State of Mato Grosso.
The three projects’ completion requires an investment of approx. 248 million US dollars.
For the first time, a photovoltaic system will also be installed to supply part of the power required by the three construction sites.
The 102 MW from hydro add up to 401 MW from wind Enel Green Power has already been awarded in previous tenders launched in the past four years and to 93 MW of hydro the company has already installed in Brazil.

Rome – Rio De Janeiro, September 4th, 2013 – Enel Green Power has been awarded energy supply contracts with 3 hydro projects for an overall capacity of 102 MW within Brazil’s first “New Energy Auction” in 2013. The public auction was named “A-5”. The 3 projects, “Salto Apiacás”, “Cabeza de Boi” and “Fazenda”, are all neighbouring and located in Mid-West Brazil, Mato Grosso State.

Once operational, the 3 hydro projects, whose completion requires a total investment of approximately 248 million US dollars, will be able to generate around 490 GWh per year. This sustainable production will help meeting the country’s high energy demand, which is estimated to grow at an annual rate of 4% until 2020.

Enel Green Power has been granted 30-year energy supply contracts envisaging the sale of a fixed amount of power generated by the three hydro plants to a pool of distribution companies operating in the Brazilian regulated market.

EGP will adopt a highly innovative and sustainable approach to the construction of the new plants by feeding groundworks also with renewable energy since the very beginning of the works. The Company will indeed build a thin film solar photovoltaic system of approximately 1.2 MW that will be able to supply part of the power required for the construction works. Once the three plants will be completed, the photovoltaic plant will keep operating, therefore adding its own renewable power to the green energy produced by the three hydro plants.

The 102 MW from hydro add up to the 401 MW of wind that Enel Green Power obtained in the 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 Brazilian public auctions – 283 MW of which are already under construction – and to the 93 MW of hydro capacity the Company already operates in Brazil, of which 38 MW belong to nine plants located in the Mato Grosso State.

Brazil is among the world leaders in renewable energy generation thanks to over 98,000 MW in installed capacity in the sector, corresponding to around 85% of the country’s total installed capacity.

Enel Green Power is the Enel Group company fully dedicated to the development and management of renewable energy sources at the international level, with operations in Europe and the Americas. The company generated more than 25 billion kWh in 2012 from water, sun, wind and the Earth’s heat - enough to meet the energy needs of approx. 10 million households and avoid the emission of over 18 million tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere. Enel Green Power is a world leader in the sector thanks to its well-balanced generation mix, providing generation volumes well over the sector average. The company has an installed capacity of approximately 8,700 MW from a mix of sources including wind, solar, hydroelectric, geothermal, and biomass. Currently, the company has approximately 740 plants operating in 16 countries in Europe and the Americas.

In Brazil, Enel Green Power is constructing wind projects for 283 MW of total capacity and runs hydro facilities for 93 MW.  In the generation segment, operating through Endesa, the Enel Group operates around 1 GW of installed capacity in Brazil, while in the distribution field, with about 6 million customers, the Group operates in the states of Rio de Janeiro and Cearà. In the transmission sector, Endesa operates an interconnection line between Brazil and Argentina.

In Latin America, Enel Green Power currently runs renewable energy plants in Mexico, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Panama, Chile and Brazil, with a total installed capacity of 990 MW. In the wind sector, in addition to its projects in Brazil, the company has  24 MW of installed wind capacity in Costa Rica, 144 MW in Mexico and 90 MW in Chile, where the company is also constructing the 90 MW “Valle de los Vientos”  and 99 MW “Taltal” wind farms. With its century-long experience in the field of geothermal energy, Enel Green Power is also developing new opportunities in this sector. In Chile, in particular, the company is exploring several concessions with a potential capacity exceeding 100 MW.

Additionally, in Latin America, operating through Endesa and its subsidiaries in five countries, the Enel Group is the largest private-sector operator, with approx. 16 GW of installed capacity and serving some 14 million customers.
