Enels 2013 Sustainability Report also qualifies as GC Advanced Communication on Progress on the UN Global Compacts issue areas.
Rome, August 13th, 2014 Enels 2013 Sustainability Report prepared according to the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Guidelines, was ranked A+, the highest Application Level of such guidelines, by GRI itself. For the eight year in a row, the award recognizes Enels commitment to transparent and accurate reporting of corporate responsibility in line with GRI guidelines. In addition, Enel based its 2013 Sustainability Report on materiality analysis, placing it at the forefront of the latest trend in sustainability reporting. This method makes it possible to evaluate how the companys strategic positioning aligns with stakeholder expectations in regard to sustainability issues.
In addition, Enels Sustainability Report fulfils its commitment to communicate its progress annually in the areas of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption. As such, Enel declared that its Communication on Progress went beyond the standard requirements for transparency and disclosure at the GC Advanced level.
Sustainability has become a strategic driver in a value creation perspective, underlines Enel CEO and General Manager Francesco Starace. The Sustainability Report plays a crucial role , given that it measures the social responsibility of the company from the economic, ethical, social and environmental points of view.
In its eleventh year, the Sustainability Report discloses on the main achievements linked to the Group sustainability strategy. An example of this is the ENabling ELectricity program, through which Enel contributes to the United Nations ten year initiative Sustainable Energy for All (2014-2024). In 2013 under this program over 30 projects in 20 countries have been implemented, achieving the target of more than 2 million beneficiaries.
The drive towards the highest sustainability standards has been rewarded by the interest of socially responsible investment funds which, despite the difficult international economic situation, are continuing to increase in number. At December 31, 2013 Enel shareholders included 117 Socially Responsible Investors (up from 108 in 2012), representing around 15.6% of the identified institutional shareholdings (compared to 14.6% in 2012).
Enels commitment to sustainability is also reflected in its medium/long-term strategy to combat climate change, with the percentage of zero emission power generation exceeding 46% out of total Group production.
In order to improve the monitoring of sustainability performance, Enel has joined other global business leaders in the reporting field by taking part in the pioneering GRI G4 program. The GRI is the most accredited standard for economic, environmental and social sustainability adopted by leading companies throughout the world. Enel reports on its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance in accordance with G3.1 guidelines, in addition to the EUSS (Electric Utilities Sector Supplement) indicators, which allow to capture the unique features of the electricity business.
