ENEL LAUNCHES SEVENTH INTERNATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY WEEK

In the last five years, the frequency and severity rates for workplace accidents involving the personnel of Enel and its subcontractors have declined by 50% and 29% respectively

Rome, June 15th, 2015 – The Chief Executive Officer and General Manager of Enel, Francesco Starace, today opened the International Health and Safety Week 2015 at the Enel Auditorium in Rome. The Enel initiative, which is now in its seventh year, is held to promote the importance of health and safety as part of the daily commitment of every company employee and its subcontractors. This year’s theme is “I care. Safety begins with me”.

In the last five years, the frequency rate for workplace accidents involving the personnel of Enel and its subcontractors has declined by 50%, while the number of serious accidents has dropped by 64%.

“Thanks to our constant attention and a range of specific measures, accidents have decreased by half in the last five years”, said Enel CEO Francesco Starace, “but we cannot let our guard down. Safety must remain our top priority and must be a personal commitment on the part of all Enel employees and subcontractors, whether in management or in operations. In fact, our lives and those of the people around us must be protected through safe and responsible behaviour. For this season, safety is included in all our specialised technical training programmes and is backed by an effective control system founded on quality, competence, action and verification”.

Enel invested a total of more than 33.3 million euros in health and safety education, information and training activities in 2014. The Group provided more than a million man-hours of training last year and since 2010 has offered a total of seven million hours.

The results achieved in safety have been recognised by the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, the world’s number one index that tracks the performance of leaders in sustainability: in 2014, Enel achieved a score of 90/100 in the “Occupational Health and Safety” category among world utilities, an important acknowledgement of the entire Group’s efforts in this field.

“I care. Safety begins with me” is also the title of an internal communication campaign involving posters, banners, display totems and other communication tools to emphasise the fact that the concept of safety should be at the core of every Enel employee and of the company’s business.

There is also a full health and safety events schedule, with more than 1,300 initiatives involving Enel Group employees and subcontractors from 19 Group countries.
