ENEL’S 2014 SUSTAINABILITY REPORT MEETS TOP TRANSPARENCY AND ACCURACY STANDARDS

The Report has been recognised for meeting Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines’ highest Application Level “A+” for the ninth straight year
For the fifth year in a row, the Report has also achieved “GC Advanced” level for Communication on Progress regarding the UN Global Compact issue areas of human rights, labour, the environment and anti-corruption

Rome, August 21st, 2015 – Enel’s 2014 Sustainability Report has met the Global Reporting Initiative’s (GRI) highest Application Level “A+” for the ninth year in a row, highlighting the company’s commitment to transparent and accurate sustainability reporting in line with GRI guidelines. In addition, Enel’s 2014 Sustainability Report includes a materiality analysis which makes it possible to evaluate how the company’s strategic positioning aligns with stakeholder expectations in regard to sustainability issues.

Enel’s Sustainability Report has also once again achieved the UN Global Compact’s “GC Advanced” level for communication of progress made in areas of human rights, labour, the environment and anti-corruption. Implementing best practices in transparency and disclosure in these areas, Enel’s Sustainability Report achieved the highest Global Compact level for the fifth consecutive year.

“The report we are presenting today reflects the role of sustainability as a key pillar in Enel’s industrial strategy,” said Enel CEO and General Manager Francesco Starace. “Focusing on the environment, social development and economic sustainability is crucial for the continued success of a global player in the energy sector. Enel’s sustainability reporting activities help to maintain that focus.”

Now in its twelfth year, Enel’s Sustainability Report discloses the key achievements linked to the Group’s sustainability strategy. One example is the ENabling ELectricity programme, through which Enel contributes to the United Nations’ initiative Sustainable Energy for All. ENabling ELectricity is aimed at fighting energy poverty by providing isolated communities and disadvantaged people with sustainable access to electricity through the development of innovative business models. The programme, through projects in 10 countries, has so far involved over 2.5 million people worldwide.

Enel’s drive towards the highest standards of sustainability reporting has been rewarded with the interest shown by socially responsible investment funds, which are increasing their presence in the company’s shareholder base. As of December 31st, 2014, Enel shareholders included 134 Socially Responsible Investors (up from 117 in 2013), around 8.6% of the free float.

The Group’s commitment to sustainability is also reflected in its medium/long-term strategy to combat climate change, with zero emissions power generation representing 47% of Enel’s total production in 2014.

Enel has been a member of the UN Global Compact, the world's largest corporate sustainability initiative, since 2004. In May 2015, Enel CEO Francesco Starace became the first representative of an Italian business to be appointed to the Board of Directors of the Global Compact.
