New York and Rome, April 21st, 2016 The Enel Foundation, the non-profit research organisation of global power company Enel, and the American Academy in Rome (AAR) have just launched a partnership. As part of the collaboration, Enel Foundation has pledged 250,000 US dollars to establish the Enel Italian Fellowship at AAR. The fellowship will be offered each year to one Italian architect, urban designer, or landscape architect at any stage of his or her career for the next five years, beginning in the fall. In addition, AAR and Enel will co-host a series of public events, symposia or exhibitions that explore innovative approaches to design and environmental sustainability in Italy and abroad.
We are delighted that the Enel Foundation has partnered with an institution as prestigious as the American Academy in Rome, said the Enel Groups Head of Innovation and Sustainability Ernesto Ciorra. The creation of and substantial investment in the new Enel Italian Fellowship is part of the Foundations commitment to developing new ideas and encouraging the sustainable development that is central to our Groups culture through partnerships with important research bodies like AAR.
The Italian Fellows programme provides Italian artists and scholars with the time and space to pursue their individual work as part of a unique and dynamic international community. These opportunities have proven to be an enriching experience, both for Italian fellows and their American counterparts. As integral members of the community, Italian fellows benefit from full access to all Academy resources, including guidance from AARs network of advisors, as well as from renowned artists and scholars living at AAR as Residents throughout the year.
The Enel Foundation's commitment to the field of urbanism, landscape architecture and the built environment is exceptional, said Mark Robbins, president of the American Academy in Rome. The Enel Fellowship at the Academy recognises the critical nature of the design disciplines for the regeneration of cities and energy sites worldwide. This collaboration also marks the vibrant participation of the AAR in an increasingly interdisciplinary creative and scholarly environment.
The inaugural recipient of the Enel Italian Fellowship is Annalisa Metta, a founding partner of OSA architettura e paesaggio, a Rome based firm that works across landscape, architecture and design. Dr Metta is an associate professor of Landscape Architecture at Roma Tre University. Her project "Southward_When Rome will have gone to Tunis," will explore environmental and ecologic effects on cities such as Rome, and will consider the challenges inherent in creating more sustainable and resilient societies.

AMERICAN ACADEMY IN ROME
Founded in 1894, the American Academy in Rome is a leading international centre for independent study and advanced research in the arts and humanities. A not-for-profit, privately funded institution, AAR annually offers the Rome Prize Fellowship and Italian Fellowships to a select group of artists and scholars, after an application process that begins each autumn. The winners, selected by independent juries through a national competition process, are invited to Rome the following year to pursue their work in an atmosphere conducive to intellectual and artistic experimentation and interdisciplinary exchange. Fellowships are offered in the following categories: Literature, Music Composition, Visual Arts, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Design, and Historic Preservation and Conservation, as well as Ancient, Medieval, Renaissance and Early Modern, and Modern Italian Studies.
