Is there a Giro d’Italia for amateurs?

Yes, after five seasons, this year the Giro d’Italia Under-23, also known as Giro Amateurs, is back. Enel will be main sponsor also of this competition and this Pink jersey. The amateurs will race along seven legs between Emilia Romagna, Marche and Abruzzo from June 9 to 15, starting from Imola and finishing uphill at Campo Imperatore, at an altitude of 2135 metres. There will be 28 competing teams managed by Nuova Ciclistica Placci 2013 from Bologna, which is in charge of the organisation, together with Davide Cassani, coach of the national road cycling team. The Giro Amateurs, nicknamed “Baby Giro”, which mirrors a sport that for many amateurs is a real social phenomenon, is now in its fortieth edition: in the past it was won by cyclists as renowned as Francesco Moser (in 1971), Marco Pantani (1992) and Gilberto Simoni (1993). To be noted: the 2017 edition will also reward the contender that finishes last, with the black jersey, which had been missing for some time.
