The energy transition is a journey of technological innovation that involves a paradigm shift to bring people back to the center of the change. It is sustainable development capable of initiating benefits across the environment, society and economy.
From this spirit, the crowdfunding project “Renewable Choice” was born, promoted by Enel Green Power to concretely and actively involve the local community in the increasingly widespread use of renewable energy sources. Thanks to this initiative, new sustainable plants have been created, the most recent being Casei Gerola Solar Park, which we inaugurated June 8 in the province of Pavia.
Citizens of Casei Gerola, in the first place, followed by all citizens in the province of Pavia, had the chance to personally support the construction of the new photovoltaic plant, choosing the economic value they wanted to contribute based on their personal preferences. Those who chose to participate benefited from a fixed rate of return on their investment, up to the repayment of the amount invested. The crowdfunding enjoyed a remarkable uptake, allowing the set goal to be reached in a short amount of time and the construction of the plant to begin.
Covering an area of 10 hectares, and housing 8,500 photovoltaic modules, the new photovoltaic plant is able to produce approximately 7 GWh of clean, locally-produced electricity. It is thus capable of meeting the energy needs of approximately 2,500 households and simultaneously avoiding the release of more than 3,000 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere every year.
This project was made possible thanks to the use of some of the most modern and efficient technologically innovative solutions, such as bifacial photovoltaic modules capable of capturing sunlight from both sides. Furthermore, the installation of automatic trackers in the solar panel support structures ensures that the devices can track the movement of the sun, thereby maximizing renewable energy production during all times of the day.
The new plant’s commencement presented an opportunity to involve young students in the educational project Energy for the future together with the association Helpcode. More than 57 students from Squadrelli Elementary School engaged in various laboratories and creative activities regarding renewable energy. They did everything from experiments to discover what sustainable energy is and how it is produced, to the creation of a handbook on sustainable habits that can be adopted to improve energy consumption, to the creation of solar energy-powered designs.
This is just one of many examples that testify to and demonstrate the awareness with which an increasing number of people are viewing the opportunities offered by the energy transition and renewable resources, opportunities that our Group continues to create in the territory, contributing to Italy’s increasing energy freedom and independence.
