Rome, 7th August 2009 The photovoltaic plant in Montalto di Castro (Viterbo) has just been completed. With 6 MW of installed capacity, it is currently the largest photovoltaic plant in Italy and among the largest in Europe. It joins Enels 3.3 MW plant in Serre Persano (Salerno), Italys first large-scale photovoltaic plant, inaugurated in 1993 and still fully operational.
The Montalto di Castro photovoltaic plant, which covers an area of nearly 10 hectares, is able to generate over 7 million kWh per year, enough to meet the power needs of 2,700 households. The solar energy generated at Montalto will avoid the emission of nearly 5,000 tonnes of CO2 annually.
The plant was designed and completed by Enel.si, which today, directly and through its franchise network, is a reference point for businesses and consumers alike when it comes to photovoltaic technology and more generally, for all energy-efficient and distributed generation solutions. In the last three years, Enel.si, a subsidiary of Enel Green Power, the Enel Group company fully dedicated to the operation and development of renewables, has led the installation of more than 80 MW of photovoltaic plants for industrial and domestic customers as well as utilities.
The panels used to construct the power station were supplied primarily by Sharp.
