When did the Giro d’Italia start?

The first Giro d’Italia took place in 1909. In August 1908, the Gazzetta dello Sport was the first newspaper to announce “one of the major, most coveted races of international cycling”, beating the Corriere della Sera. At 2.53 in the morning on 13 May 1909, a group of 127 cyclists set out on an adventure that would cover eight legs, taking them down to Naples and back up to Milan for a total 2,448 kilometres. The winner was Luigi Ganna.

The 2017 edition of the Giro is special: it is number 100. In fact, the race was cancelled from 1915 to 1918 and from 1941 to 1945, due to the wars.
