The bikeconomy – i.e. the economy that revolves around the world of cycling, which includes manufacturing, bike-tourism, investments in cycle paths and social benefits - is worth some 200 billion euros and employs over 70,000 people in Europe alone. Of course, as journalist Paolo Rumiz wrote in ‘Three men on a bicycle’, using the two pedal wheels “I carry around the child that is inside of me.” Then you discover that the positive effects are not only psychological, they are also related to environment and pollution, health improvement (dozens of billions medical costs saved), manufacturing (Italy is the second largest bike and accessory producer in Europe, although the domestic demand is still low) and traffic, further reduced by bike sharing. Nowadays, bicycles are ideal objects-testimonial for sustainable mobility and an actual lifestyle that combines health and environmental benefits. These values have always inspired Enel's ‘philosophy’. Hence the ‘natural’ partnership with the Giro d’Italia.
